The fourth chapter is narrated by Patria. At first, she goes to the convent in intent of becoming a nun. Soon, she is told by Sor Asunción to listen to her calling. On Holy Thursday, when she is washing feet, she meets a man and falls in love. She questioned again by Sor Asunción if she has found her calling. on February 24th, Pedrito and Patria are married. Nelson is born and then Noris. She gets pregnant with a third child. Meanwhile, Patria begins to be concerned for her sisters as she openly speaks out against Trujillo. While concerned for her sister’s faith, Patria soon realizes her “faith was shifting” (Alvarez 52) as well. Soon after, she has a miscarriage and her son is buried.
