The Frightening Decision Everyday a parent has the choice to take care of their children or to let him/her suffer at their hands due to bad decisions and bad care taking. In the novel Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, the main character George faces a similar scenario where his best friend Lennie murders Curley’s wife another main character, not for the torture or fun of killing, but because the fright of what people will do or think of him for the little mistakes he makes and the problems and messes he’s caused.George must make a hard choice to either let Lennie live and suffer through Curley’s languish or to disallow Lennie and yield him from endless torture at the hand of an enemy.This novel shows that mercy killing is only okay if the …show more content…

“He never done it in meaning all the time he done bad things, but never done one of em mean”(steinbeck 95). This shows George would never kill him, the only reason is just because he did it for Lennie’s misery to end.Once Curley finds out Lennie killed his wife,he angrily warns, “I’m gonna get him, I’m going for my shotgun, I’ll kill him myself, I’ll shoot him in the guts”(Steinbeck 96).This shows that George made a wise decision killing Lennie to save him from the wrath he would’ve faced with Curley.Before Lennie’s death, George had a conversation with him about their future to make his last moments gleeful, “we gonna get a little place, he reached into his pocked and pulled out Carlsons luger”(Steinbeck 105).This shows, George really did care about Lennie and wanted his last moments to be in a happy place where he was happy and all of his dreams came true. Mercy killing in euthanasia is right because if you're in so much pain where you can't really deal with it anymore and you'd rather just die then, you have that choice that's safer and less painful then, just being killed, it puts you out of your misery in a way that doesn't hurt. Mercy killing or euthanasia, is the killing of someone who is very sick in order to prevent any further suffering,this type of death is humane , it's empathic. This way of death comes from a loved one’s mercy, or compassion to insure the person they loved will no longer be living with immortal pain. Mr.Williams said, “it's not a choice between life and death.It is a choice between different ways of dying”(Preiss).
