The Struggles of Depression Jeannette Walls wrote The Glass Castle that told the story of the obstacles she was able to overcome during her childhood. Her childhood was not the typical childhood. She moved around alot and was not able to count on a meal everyday. Her father was an alcoholic. He was able to become sober a couple of times throughout the book but it never lasted. Her family was very poor. The mother had a college degree in teaching. She was able to find work when she wanted, but often she would work and hate it and soon quit. Jeannette was gifted as a child. Although she was not always enrolled in school, when she was she did very well. One story that really stuck out to me was when Jeannette was cooking hot dogs and caught herself on fire. It is crazy to me to think that her parents allowed a three year old to cook herself hot dogs. She ended up being in the hospital for 6 months. She was never actually discharged. One day her father just took her to avoid paying the hospital bills. I had a great childhood. My childhood was filled with laughter and happiness. I also had a very good home life. My parents are still married, I am close with both of my sisters, I get to see my grandparents and cousins very often. I made friends during my childhood that I have kept, and will probably keep for a lifetime. Yet, in 10th grade I began to notice that I just wasn’t happy anymore. I began to develop anxiety. It made me very anxious to go anywhere with friends. I hated being in large crowds. After a while, I just started to stay home. I would sleep all day.
