The Glass Castle is a memoir based on the life of the Walls family. The narrator Jeannette Walls tells the story from her perspective from the flashback of her childhood up to her adult stage in life. The Walls family is always on the skedaddle, and the parents don’t seem to care about giving the kids a productive or stable life. The Walls children have a different childhood experience than most normal kids. The kids learn survival skills early, they are taught to have an open-mind, and they are raised to live out in the open with nature. Her father takes advantage of that love and belief for him at times. She loves her parents even at times when she wants to be angry with them. Jeannette bonds with her brother Brian more than her sisters Lori and Maureen, because they both like being outdoors enjoying nature and having adventures. Jeannette's emotions change towards her parents throughout the story. She always gave into her dad's drinking problem and still supported him even when he let the whole family down. Jeannette, Lori, and Brian start saving up money to send Lori to New York, but then their dad steals the money so he can go and drink. He’s an electrician and engineer and a brilliant man who invents contraptions. He likes to be out in the open with nature, and he wants to search for gold. He always takes money for his drinking addiction, which causes the family to struggle. He went through a whole process to stop drinking only to start right back. Every Time their living arrangements seems stable he gets up and moves the family somewhere else claiming that bill collectors are after them or the electricians union is corrupt. He has a tendency of letting his family down. Sadly towards the end of the book, Rex Walls passes away. Rose Mary Walls is the mother, who feels like her kids are keeping her back from pursuing her dreams of being an artist. She has a teaching degree, but she hates teaching because she’d rather be an artist which doesn’t bring in any income. She’s open-minded, and like her husband Rex, she loves to be out in the open with nature. She takes a teaching job to keep the welfare people from taking her kids and coming back to inspect their house. She doesn’t have a backbone when it comes down to her
