The setting of this book is set during the Great Depression in the 1930s in two different places. The start of the story is set beside a river, presumably the Salinas River, which is a few miles south of Soledad in California and is where the two main characters are introduced. It has vegetation which surrounds it, many piles of ashes which tells that many men have used this site to rest, a sycamore tree which has been smoothed by the many men to have sat on it and the path leading down is described to have been' beaten hard by boys who coming down from the ranches to swim in the deep pool,'.It then moves to a ranch which is where the main part of the story is held and is where the rest of the characters are introduced. And then it moves back to the river setting again at the end of the story. Whereas in 'The Grapes of Wrath' the setting moves to multiple locations: in the first chapter it starts out in a small remote village, in the red and gray country of Oklahoma where the dilemma is introduced then, in the second chapter, moves to a roadside restaurant in Oklahoma City but it then changes to the country side for the next couple of chapters but it ranges from an old yew tree where Tom Joad meets Ex-Reverend Jim Casy to the Joad's old wrecked house to their Uncles house where their all staying. It then moves to a rundown car shop where it describes in the words of the manager of two men coming forward to buy parts from the cars (the two men are Al and Tom Joad). It then moves to in the car where they argue and debate over several matters, before moving to a house on the edge of Plot The plot is that two Spreckels workers are making there way to a ranch in California, after working and getting kicked out of Weed. They then hear the news of puppies being born Lennie is intrigued and set on obtaining a puppy and petting it. It calms down for a bit now until Curley has a fight with Lennie and Lennie ends up breaking Curley's right hand. They then go to Susy's bar to have a drink and gamble while they leave Lennie with Crooks, Candy and Curley's wife. Lennie and Candy seek refuge in Crooks room, they tell Crooks the idea of a perfect ranch and Curley's wife interferes by seeking the answer to Curley's broke wrist. The boys arrive back at the house, start playing a horseshoe tournament and Lennie escapes to the puppies where he finds one dead as he had stroked it too hard. Curley's wife appears in the door frame and frantically starts talking to Lennie as she has no one else to talk too. She then let's Lennie stroke her soft hair and Lennie accidentally kills Curley's wife by pulling her hair and breaking her neck as he grips it in panic because she started shouting. Lennie then runs away go the river where George had told him to go if anything goes wrong. Curley then goes mad and orders Lennie to be killed so George sets out and finds Lennie, calms him down and then kills him. But in 'The Grapes of Wrath' the plot is
