The story takes place in the Republic of Gilead in 1900s, it was said to have replaced the United States of America. The narrator was said to be in a high school gymnasium which was later identified to be the Women’s Center, a training ground for the handmaids. The handmaids are women who are bound by the government to conceive a child for the elite couples who are having trouble in acquiring their child. Women of Gilead turned to be infertile because of radiation and pollution which was perceived as a major crisis since it led for a dramatic decrease natality in their land.

She was married to a divorced man named Luke whom she had a child with. After she was captured, her marriage with Luke was considered to be void. Then, she was sent to a Rededucation Center which they refer to as the Red center since it was surrounded by color that color. At first she did not identify her name but as her story unfolds, it was revealed that she was called by the name of Offred ,a name ordered to for her to use that will replace the original one. Offred serves as a handmaid for the Commander and his wife , Serena Joy who was a former gospel singer on television. Offred simply is combined “Of” and “Fred” since her master’s name is Fred and the handmaids are treated to be properties of who they serve. In order for her to get pregnant, Offred must have sex with the Commander occasionally following the a ceremony.
