The Reading this week “‘Handlin’ Your Business’ Sexual Respectability and Peers” by Lorena Garcia reveals how Latina girls understand and discuss sexuality. The reading describes how the girls try took take the role of the good girl in the “good girl/bad girl” dichotomy. In the girl's process to prove to be a good girl they just embrace and justified the “good girl/bad girl” dichotomy even more. Along with the “good girl/bad girl” dichotomy was the discussion of the double standard for men who can be more sexual than women. The girl's idea of safe sex was also a way to protect themselves from being labeled as dirty or the bad girl.

Rape on the Night Shift is a documentary about the sexual assaults that some of the janitors suffer while working at night. This documentary reveals the injustice that these workers have to go through because most of them are undocumented and they don’t know their rights. The experiences of woman in this documentary is correlated with the feminist theory, the idea of seeing women unequal to men and the idea of the men having the power to control women. Indeed, the documentary let us see the gender inequality, exploitation, and the de-valuing of woman’s work. We see the feminist theory in the documentary when the managers or supervisors sexually abuse of their workers.

Eliza Haywood writes the cautionary tale Fantomina in order to instruct women against pursuing their sexual desires. The protagonist, an unnamed “Lady of distinguished Birth” (41), secretly pursued her desires for Beauplaisir under the guise of four different personas, ultimately leading to the ruin of her reputation and being sent to live in a monastery. I will refer to the main character when she is not disguised as the protagonist to avoid confusion. I will be discussing female sexuality, where I will be focussing on certain aspects including sexual identity, sexual behaviour, and how social and religious aspects affect this sexuality. Gender roles and stereotypes are commonly known throughout society and continuously demonstrated as film as well. Through the work of director Judd Apatow, we can compare these stereotypes to the portrayal of gender in Knocked Up and identify how this film pokes fun at gender stereotypes. As we watch this film and follow the story line of Allison and Ben, we can see how Apatow reversed the gender roles of the two lead characters, Ben and Allison and how this effected the films meaning. In romantic, geek centered comedies such as “Knocked Up”, the roles of men and women are often reversed.
Mean Girls, set in Illinois, depicts the socio-political climate of an American high school, with it’s protagonist, Cady Heron moving from Africa and homeschooling to be socialised in her new society. The antagonist throughout the film, Regina George, is portrayed as an authoritarian woman who has total control of the school (Mean Girls 2004). Regina is shown to engage with numerous sexual partners at the same time and promotes her liberation through wearing a tee-shirt with her bra protruding out the front when she finds two holes cut at her breasts; motivating a new fashion trend throughout the cohort (Mean Girls 2004, Robinson-Cseke 2009, p. 45). This depiction of a strong, independent woman aligns with ‘Post-feminist texts-films, books, magazines and television programs characterised by a model of young womanhood that is empowered, successful, entitled, independent, socially mobile and free to choose her destiny’ (Toffoletti 2008, p. 72). Post feminism is further reflected in the film through the power change which occurs, transferring from Regina to Cady, mirroring the transfer of power from second wave feminism to post feminism.
Boyhood is a 2014 American drama film directed and written by Richard Linklater. It is a coming of age story. The film was created over 12-year span with the same people. It includes among 2002-2013. Basically, the movie is about a young boy named Mason and his family.
The title of the book “Virgins” communicates more than the first sexual act. It depicts the inability to make personal decisions without basing off other people’s opinions and beliefs. The story is an analysis of the progression of two females and their interaction with men. Though different, each girl has a different perception of sexual anatomy and hence Evans is able to communicate his message that virginity or sexuality is something that is a sole decision of someone despite whether they have had vaginal sex or not. Throughout the story, Erica is unsure with men.
Moreover, this restriction on expressing sexuality encourages passive behavior amongst women. In addition, linking a woman’s ethics to her body reinforces the double standard related to sexuality between men and women. Ultimately, being sexual is “stigmatized in women, but encouraged in men” (Heldman, Part 2). This double standard, combined with the expectations of passivity, reinforces the concept of rape culture. Women are expected to refrain from sex in order to embody purity and thus, are defined by what they do not do.
In observation of oppression, Sammy proves the surprising yet often discerned motivation of the teenager: dismantle wrongdoing and protect common peers (especially when desire is at the doorstep). Held within the confines of the store, Sammy discovers a longing for these three girls through the contrast of the background; without it, Queenie and her friends may remain confined and their indecency not captured. While most may oppose the teenagers’ apparel, Updike illustrates that adolescents are powerful; strength, fortitude, and discovery are instantaneous, even in The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company. Ultimately, A&P is a cultural awakening; adults, guardians, and leaders must recognize that adolescents are vulnerable and passionate. Without support and understanding, teenagers are likely to make rash, abrupt decisions.
Boyhood embodies coming of age where the director Richard Linklater with Mason Junior, Olivia (Mason’s mother), Mason senior (Mason’s father and Olivia’s ex-husband), Samantha (Mason’s sister) builds an emotional saga which enumerates individual emotions and relationships. Linklater made film history by shooting the motion picture for 4-5 days (consistently) for the traverse of 12 years just to draw out the progression of time. Boyhood is an intimate movie which covers relationships between children and parents, adolescence, and child psychology, and further exemplifies the development of a six year old boy to an eighteen year old man, where the characters go through a series of emotional and physical changes, Mason’s voice drops, he grows taller, his parents grow older, you can feel the adolescence oozing out of the two
