How does one live with oneself knowing they are the reason for killing an innocent boy? In Bleachers, John Girsham, Eddie Rake did not intentionally kill Scotty Reardon; he is still the primary reason for his death. Rake got so caught up in winning, and with football he did not care how brutal, or long, the practices were. After Scotty’s death, Rake would spend the rest of his life regretting killing Scotty, and how he treated the rest of his boys. For the rest of his life, Eddie Rake would work hard to have the people of Messina forgive him, and to forgive himself.

Narrative conventions and language
Many books throughout time have been written with similar plots to portray imperative themes to their readers. A great example of this, is the comparison of James Hurst’s short story The Scarlet Ibis, and John Steinbeck’s classic novel Of Mice and Men. To begin, The Scarlet Ibis is set in the early 1900’s on the North Carolina countryside and explains the relationship between the Narrator, and his disabled younger brother named Doodle. Of Mice and Men on the other hand, is set during the Great Depression on a California farm. This novel describes the relationship of Lennie; a dependent, mentally disabled man, and George; his loyal friend and caretaker.
In the story of The Outcasts of Poker Flat, four people, Mother Shipton, Uncle Billy, John Oakhurst and The Duchess were cast out of their homes and the town they lived in by the upstanding people of the town. They begin walking to a camp on the other side of the mountain when they meet up with Piney Woods and Tom Simson, a couple on their way to elope. The group stops halfway to their destination at a remote cabin. During the night, Uncle Billy absconds with the mules and horses and all the group’s supplies. Shortly after the character leaves, a blizzard comes, which consequently leaves the rest of the characters to perish in the blizzard.
The novel Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck is a gripping tale of two men and their lives during the Great Depression. George Milton and Lennie Small are two migrant workers who travel together finding work. They take on a new job “bucking barley” at a ranch in central California for the ranch owner and his son. While working at the ranch they encounter Curley the ranch owner’s son and his wife, a flirtatious woman. The story reaches a climax when Lennie unintentionally kills Curley’s wife and runs back to the Salinas River just as George instructed.
In order to inform the reader on life as a hillbilly, the novel investigates the group as a whole by analyzing, discussing, and recounting the culture (parallel structure). For example, Vance discusses the American Dream- the notion that through hard work, any US citizen is capable of success. In the present day, it is not uncommon (litote) for a person to believe that the American Dream is no longer of substance. However, Vance makes evident that, despite what the general population believes, the American dream is absolutely achievable as of today. He writes, “What separates the successful from the unsuccessful are the expectations that they had for their own lives.
Steinbeck makes the tragedy of Of Mice and Men apparent to the readers by portraying an ideal setting and dream. This foreshadows the concept of ideas being “too good to be true.” He also used the foreshadowing of other events. The story began in an ideal state.
Alex Slater Mr. Williams Honors American Literature 02 March 2023 Natural Development John Oakhurst finds himself exiled from the village of Poker Flat, attempting to motivate and encourage other exiled outcasts, similar to himself, to move quickly and escape the impending deadly snowstorm. John endeavors to hurry his party of outcasts, but fails. John, having no way to navigate the wilderness on his own, succumbs to the temptation of suicide rather than facing the harsh storm that would have taken his life anyway. Bret Harte, a famous writer of the Realism and Regionalism time period who helped create the vivid image of the Old West, tells the story of John Oakhurst in “Outcasts of Poker Flats”. In this short story, Harte effectively creates
Of Mice and Men, set in California’s Salinas Valley, depicts the world of the migrant worker, a world in which Steinbeck himself had lived, and the workers’ search for independence. Steinbeck was critical of what he perceived as the United States’ materialism, and his work echoes his convictions about the land and its people. Like the characters in his Pulitzer Prize-winning novel The Grapes of Wrath (1939), Of Mice and Men’s George and Lennie dream of a piece of land to call their
Moreover, it focused on the man who is trapped in an antagonistic universe without any chance of happiness and hope for the future. Many writers during the 1930 's and 1940 's concentrated on the brave individual stories of the lower and middle classes members and the protagonists were mostly of the working-class or of lower middle-class origin; who view society with contempt and ironic humor and may have conflict with authority. They used many techniques such as: flashback, irony, music, and stage direction. The plot in the plays of the
Sherman Alexie uses a combination of reality and fiction in order to show the reader what he thinks the lives of people on the Spokane Indian Reservation was like. In regards to what differentiates the fiction from the non-fiction of the stories you could look at present day Native American Reservations. Some reservations are still plagued with alcoholism, and poverty of the past. While the characters and stories are just vessels to deliver the message and show what Sherman Alexie portrayed the reservation live to be. The reaction and impact that this has on the reader is the same as the age-old use of story telling.
It is very difficult to be able to write a piece so beautifully by giving it life using the dialect so preciously giving the reader the sense of living in that time period. The story contains grammar and sentence structure we use as we speak to one another. The way it’s written and read is very obvious, no one can deny that, but looking closely at the words as they come to life by giving them a persona of their own is completely hidden from the text. For example, when Joe and Missie were playing with each other in the kitchen and as Missie searches his pockets Joe says, “Missie May, take yo’ hand out mah pocket!” looking at that sentence right there we can tell there is a lot of spelling errors
After a thorough, external evaluation and necropsy were conducted with all three birds, we have concluded that Bird A represents what a chicken looks like when at the end of molting. We concluded that Bird A represents end of molting because when necropsied we found that there was almost no fat, as well as shrunken reproductive organs such as the ovaries. Externally, Bird A weighed way less than Birds B and C. We believe that this is because the bird has exerted a lot of reserved energy into staying alive and growing new feathers. Also, Bird A had been not eating feed in the start of molting for a certain number of days, presumably for a week or two when molting was encouraged.
Throughout my childhood I witnessed the numerous challenges that my mother has had to face from being diagnosed with Crohn’s disease at age twenty-three. This personal connection with a life changing disease has inspired and encouraged my dedication to studying Biochemistry at the University of Washington. I am motivated to utilize the opportunities provided to me through education in order to improve circumstances for others impacted by such diseases. Her sickness has never kept her back from her dedication or desire to help me, even when she herself needed the most help. As a young adult I understand, admire, and appreciate everything she has sacrificed for me.
