In The Outliers: The Story of Success, Malcolm Gladwell emphasizes that success is achieved by external forces in which certain individuals are granted particular opportunities and advantages that not everybody is given by destiny. What is the meaning of success? In general, success means to have a goal set in mind, have a plan to accomplish a goal, work hard and achieve it. Commonly, achieving success is a process that requires time, effort, and dedication in order to accomplish it. Success might have different meanings to everyone; therefore there is no right or wrong answer. Culture affects our behavior which influences the way each and everyone thinks, therefore it affects one’s success. Culture legacies can sometimes be dangerous as Gladwell describes when he explained the cultural legacy through airplane crashes focusing on the Korean Air accidents during the 1990’s. In addition to gaining the opportunity to receive experience, someone successful also benefits from one’s cultural legacy (Gladwell 182). Gladwell explains how Asian cultures reward hard work more than other cultures. Most Asian cultures cultivate rice and rice farmers are known to work harder than any other farmers. Since most Asian cultures are used to working hard, their culture and hard work contribute to good math skills. Plus Asians’ culture legacies consists of hard work and a logical number system, which is combined together to generate success (Gladwell 228). The different types of intelligence Gladwell describes in chapters 3 and 4 are analytical and practical intelligence. According to Gladwell, analytical intelligence is your ability to solve problems and complete academic tasks. A person’s analytical intelligence can also be measured by IQ tests. In the other hand Gladwell, states that practical intelligence in part comes from your genes. Is the intelligence you gained from exposure to experiences and situations that allow a person to gain knowledge of how to act. In a way your practical intelligence helps you get what you want because you learn to manipulate a certain situation. You do not necessarily need to be a genius in order to be successful in life, but both analytical and practical intelligence are important (Gladwell). Both types of intelligence are very important in order to be successful, but not all of us know how to use both of them. In the Outliers, analytical intelligence seems to be more valued by society than analytical intelligence. This has been proven because most of the well-known people who became successful are very intelligent people like Bill Gates. There are many more successful people who are remembered today because they were very smart inventors that have made a difference in how technology functions
