It is More than Just Physical Strength When one builds a house, it is a given that a great amount of effort must be put in to have a successful project. Sure, this house needs a sturdy exterior, a strong roof, and walls to support the winter’s storm. However, the inside is just as important. Without floors, the house collapses, without strong pipes, the house floods. In order to face those harsh storms, much like a survivor, one needs a strong interior and exterior. When all else fails, a survivor needs the strength within to step up and build a house again, better than the one before. Without love, one is left alone with the grief and responsibilities to face hardships alone. A survivor searches for friendship when there is none. A survivor learns to forgive and show compassion even when in the wrong. They know that by not doing so, chaos will erupt from a volcano of hatred and envy. Without love, one cannot function. One’s heart will not beat; no color will be brought to the world of black and white. Charlie, a socially awkward teen in the novel The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky, thrives to be that color. When told by his own sister, “You’re a freak, you know that? You’ve always been a freak. Everyone says so. They always have” (Chbosky 26). Even in ruthless sibling riots, Charlie still shows love for his sister. Without hope, there is no future. One is stuck in quicksand and will only keep sinking unless a new look on a situation is found. A survivor needs hope because without it their outlooks on life would never see the light of day. Hope gives one the strength to keep powering through and vision a brighter future. For instance, Maya Angelou, an American Poet and civil rights activist, survives by having hope for a new, empowering future. As she battles through segregation, she writes in her poem “Life Doesn’t Frighten Me”, “I can walk the ocean floor and never have to breathe. Life doesn't frighten me at all” (Angelou). Ultimately showing her mental strength to rise above others, she continues to thrive with her spirits high and continue fighting. A survivor needs hope in order to picture the light at the end of the tunnel; to reach for the aspect they have been working for so long to achieve. Hope is a flame to a survivor’s heart.
