Charlie’s problems started after the death of his beloved aunt Helen, and from there on, he was in and out of hospitals repeatedly. We are carried throughout Charlie’s freshman year in high school, where he constantly battles depression, anxiety, and loneliness. These things eventually lead to him experimenting with all sorts of antidepressants, including drugs and alcohol.
