Cherrylog Road James Dickey’s poem, Cherrylog Road, is clearly an exhilarating, narrative poem. The speaker of this piece is a young man reminiscing of a past love affair that was forbidden. This is a provocative poem, told in the first person and is full of figurative language and symbolism. The setting of this poem is in a rural part of an unnamed Southern state, off of Highway 96 at Cherrylog Road. It is at the peak of a summer afternoon in a junkyard full of discarded cars.

In the story Warriors Don’t Cry by Melba Pattillo Beals, Melba integrated an all white school so blacks can get an equal education as whites. In the story I Never Had It Made by Jackie Robinson, Jackie was the first African American to play in the Major Leagues. Finally, in the story “Father of Chinese Aviation” by Rebecca Maksel, Feng Ru, became the first Chinese aviator to build planes of his own design.

A variety of issues are examined in Dawe’s poetry, most of which, aren’t uniquely Australian. In ‘The Wholly Innocent’, the poet utilises the narrator being an unborn baby to express their opinion on abortion. The emotive language; “defenceless as a lamb” and comparisons of abortion to “genocide”, all turn this poem into a type of activism, for pro-life; a concept that is certainly not uniquely Australian; as abortion is only legal (on request) in 4 states and territories. These issues aren’t always directly referenced in Dawe’s poetry, much like in ‘The Family Man’, which chooses to explore suicide and it’s effect. The man who killed himself had no name - he was just a statistic, that had “all qualifications blown away with a trigger’s touch”.

In the poem, “The Street”, author Ann Petry uses a variety of literary devices to describe an antagonistic relationship between a girl named Lutie Johnson and 116th Street. Petry’s use of imagery establishes a real environment that is filled with paper, trash, strong winds, and dust. To further engage the reader, personification and other figurative language elements are used to describe the urbanized setting and the characteristics of the wind while a woman is finding her way of staying on this street. Throughout the poem, the November weather is established as a war zone while personifying the wind as it battles with the urbanized society.
Heroes are everywhere Literature is full of characters that people may say are heroic. The first book, “The Odyssey” is an epic poem written by Homer, taking place in ancient Greece, where Odysseus the main character lives. The second book, “The Things They Carried” is a fiction piece by Tim O’Brien, taking place in Vietnam where Tim O’Brien, one of the main characters is stationed in the war. People you least expect can show heroism in different ways. Odysseus and Norman are heroic because they do stuff for people others would not do.
‘For What It’s Worth’ by Buffalo Springfield has a logical message because it is referring to the Sunset Strip Riots that took place in Hollywood during the 1960’s. People protested when they lost their civil rights due to a curfew law that was put into place. The song says, “Stop, children, what’s that sound. Everybody look- what’s going down?”

“A Song in the Front Yard” by Gwendolyn Brooks is a narrative poem. This poem is written from the perspective of an innocent, naïve child. The poem tells several stories, the surface story and the hidden metaphor. Therefore, the narrator is that of a child, the surface story is of a young girl who has lived a sheltered, picturesque life. The young girl lives life in the “front yard”, but she wishes to live in the “back”.
The poem I will be analyzing will be “Uncoiling” by Pat Mora. The theme the author is portraying is the personification of a tornado . It has a dark/fearful/grim tone as she describes the storm that is accruing. The author is using similes, and personification to convey the theme. The very first figurative language used in the poem is personification.

“On the Subway,” written by Sharon Olds, is written from the perspective of what is presumed to be an upper class white woman, who finds herself on a subway with a lower class black boy. In “On the Subway”, Olds focuses on the controversial issue of racial conflict, and the theme of White v. Black. She does so by use of contrast between whites and blacks, by using harsh enjambments, powerful imagery, and by using the tone to convey the purpose. A major strategy used by Olds throughout the poem is contrast; in this case, the contrast between blacks and whites.
