The years of the 1950s and 60s was a time where many hardships occurred as global tension was high and as a result many wars occurred as well as movements. The historical issues and events of the fifties and sixties was often propelled by popular culture through art and media such as television, paintings and music. The civil rights movement succeeded in bringing equal rights to the African American population within the United States in a peaceful manner thanks to meaningful art forms. The Vietnam War was widely seen as a controversial conflict and opened insight to Australians as to what was actually happening through music and television which in turn swayed the public opinion of Australia’s involvement with the war.
Many historians view the 1950s as an era of prosperity, conformity, and consensus, and view the 1960s as turbulences, protest, and disillusionment. I agree with many historians and their point of view to this era. Socially speaking, although the Civil Rights movement had started roughly around 1954, the 1960s was the period where the Civil Rights movement skyrocket. The 1950s were viewed as a prosperous and conformist for the reason of the development of the suburbs.
Social change developments ejected in the 1960s for a few interrelated reasons. In the first place, since the 1930s the part of the government had turned out to be progressively vital in Americans' regular day to day existences, and individuals started to look to the government to determine issues. Second, after World War II (1939-1945), the United States developed as a worldwide power that rivaled the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR); this opposition was both a political and good campaign to persuade individuals around the globe that Western popular government was better than the Communist framework received by the USSR. Third, the 1960s were times of relative financial flourishing for the vast majority of the nation, making monetary difference in the United States more self-evident. The 1960s were a time of revolution and a time of civil rights, movements were being held left to right by very influential political and union leaders. During the 60s there was spectacular change but not all was good. It also kept the nation from turning on each other. Rebellions, wars and threats of nuclear warfare were in the voices of everyone. This was a time of racial and sexual identity.
Before the 60s, Brown v. Board of Education was passed which led to a couple of reforms in de jure segregation, but not heavily mandated by the government. President John F. Kennedy could not do much for the movement due to his desire to keep his image in front of Southern Democrats and his lack of popular mandate in Congress. There was a groundwork set for the movement, but it had not entered its most energized form. However, when the 1960s hit, there were changes that occurred in the entire setting of the movement. The 1950s gave rise to strict social norms, the civil rights movement, the Beat generation and McCarthyism. The 1950s and the 1960s were more prosperous for some more than others. With the economy booming people were more inclined to buy more goods.(Doc C) The Black community was barred from the same opportunities as white people. While whites moved into the suburbs blacks moved to the inner cities.(Doc B)

The 1960s in the United States was marked by many significant events, such as the Civil Rights Movement, the Cuban Missile Crisis, and the rise of subculture that reshaped America’s identity. Although the Civil Rights Movement was successful in that it advanced rights for minorities, it was problematic because it created racial tension between whites and blacks and gave police the opportunity to brutalize Civil Rights advocates. The 1960’s into the 1970’s were a prominent time in American history. The Civil Rights Movement was happening in the 1960’s and the Vietnam War was happening from the middle of the 1950’s into the 1970’s. During both time periods, America was very divided. One part of America was fighting for integration and one part of America was fighting against the Vietnam War. The other part of America wanted still wanted segregation and wanted to keep being involved in the Vietnam War.
The 1960’s were an age of political unrest. There were many African Americans nationwide striving for racial equality. In 1965, Lyndon B. Johnson delivered a speech to garner support from the members of congress to pass his proposed voting bill. Lyndon B. Johnson’s “We Shall Overcome” speech, uses the rhetorical appeals and repetition to push for racial equality in order to pass the Voting Rights Act. Background Information
The stormy sixties was a time for transformation. All of the changes happened because of the new generation taking over. The new generation is also taking over now in 2018 as kids show their control by organizing marches such as the “March for Our Lives” for gun control. Children are very commanding and influential, and they do not and will not ever abandon their own country. Children were very important to the changes that occurred during the 1960’s
2 It is essential to go back to the fifties to be able to understand the sixties historically and sociologically. The fifties brought relief since the Depression and war were over, and now “science was mobilized by industry, and capital was channeled by government as never before.” 3 This new affluence gave the United States the ability to create suburbia and conform to moving in. This affected the sixties because conformity resulted in people rebelling.
During the 1950’s and 60’s, protests were occurring all throughout the United States. Ordinary citizens and civil rights leaders alike joined each other to voice their opposition and frustrations with the everyday injustices and discrimination that they were faced with. Although there are many figures associated with the successes that came from the time period, grassroot activism immensely propelled the movements because without them, the marches and demonstrations would not have been possible. Student activism especially was essential to many of the movements because of their connections to other adolescents and the fact that they were the upcoming generation made their voice interesting to the media. The Conflicts of the 1960’s Have you ever thought of living in a world where schools, restaurants, and even movie theaters would refuse to give service to someone just because of the color of their skin? Or put white and African American people in different sections just because their skin was a different color? That’s the way African American people had to live in the 1960’s all around America.
