Everyday millions of people across the globe use the internet; many never even leave the computer desk. In the article, “Is Google Making Us Stupid” the author Nicholas Carr, brings up the point that our brains are losing their attention span. He explained that many, including himself, are finding it harder to read long groups of text and articles. Though Carr brings up a good point, his argument lacked factual information, was a little dull, contained next to no credible sources, and is all over the board with he’s ideas, all of these things made his argument weak. Carr’s opening paragraph really grabs your attention, by using quotes from the movie A Space Odyssey by Stanley Kubrick’s.
Carr is effective in his argument by sharing his fears and personal experiences to have an effect on the audience utilizing pathos and ethos. Not only does he include his own experience, but he also includes other people’s point of views. He goes on to support his claim of how technology
Carr believes that we depend on the Internet more than just looking up the answers in the book ourselves. He is trying to prove that our generation is consumed by the Internet. In addition to this, I feel his argument is effective because he builds credibility with personal facts, using statistics, and making emotional appeals throughout the essay. He gives many details and examples to backup and support his argument. Nicholas Carr gives himself credibility by stating that he knows what’s going on in his own mind, this is where he is uses ethos.

Carr writes, “ I'm just seeking convenience, but because that way I THINK has changed”(33). For him, the internet is a way for him to access information quicker than using a book, or any other medium. This constant use of the internet has altered his thought process, in which he now it is easier for him to use the internet rather than reading a book. In the book The Shallows author Nicholas Carr explains how he believes that technology is taking over everything and changing the way we think and process information. As a reader I also believe that technology is changing the way we process information because of all the examples he uses to prove his point. In the different chapters he gives examples from past historians and psychologists to explain why he believes the things he does, Carr also interviews college professors and doctors to see if they have noticed a difference in themselves or in patients of theirs with the same problem, and lastly throughout the book and on the internet there are multiple reviews on the opinions of the technology. Dumb is defined as not being able to read or write. In every generation there are changes among each generation after another to a certain extent. In today’s generation it is solely based on the uprising of complex technology being used. Past generations have only heard of writing handwritten letters by mail or only having a telephone to communicate. Now today it is about text messaging, cellular phones, emails, and etc.
When Carr discusses how the internet has affected people close to him he discusses their experiences by saying, “The more they use the Web, the more they have to fight to stay focused on long pieces of writing”. This phenomenon is quite evident in "Fahrenheit 451" with Mildred, the programing she views has reduced her attention span to nearly nonexistent as she doesn’t fully comprehend what Montag says in their discussions. A con of the internet would have to be the fact that information is readily available, it allows us to consume lots of information in a shorter amount of time. In the past information took time to find and was mostly found in written books, "Fahrenheit 451" is a society in which this concept has been brought to an extreme. In The Shallows, Nicholas Carr discusses the internet’s effect on human thought. This is perfectly shown in Chapter Nine which is titled “Search, Memory.” Carr speaks on how the internet effects long term memory. The chapter quotes one of the smartest minds in the history of Western Civilization, Socrates. Socrates is quoted, “Writing down their thoughts and reading the thoughts of others had written down, they become less dependent on the contents of their own memory.”
Over generations and generations the world has seen many changes that has impacted the world and the lives of people. Some of those changes include the printing press, computers, and the smartphone. Nicholas Carr makes the claim that, “as the internet because our primary source of the information it is affecting our ability to read books and other long narratives.” Carr suggests that using the internet is altering the way that our minds operate.
The Shallows shows many points on the Internet. What Nicholas Carr says in the book is mostly faced towards how the internet is doing terrible things to our brains. Carr explains to the reader that ever since we have started inventing new things we have become lazier. I agree with Carr’s statement. When the internet was invented we had access to almost everything because of it.
The Influence of Technology In the essay, “Is Google Making Us Stupid?” Nicholas Carr argues that utilization of the internet has an adverse effect on our way of thinking and functioning in everyday life. Whether it be reading a newspaper, or scrolling through Facebook, internet media has forever stamped its name in our existence. Carr explains to us that the internet is a tool used every single day in today’s society, but also makes most of us complacent with the ease of having the world at our fingertips.
Nicholas Carr's argument against the internet was very strong, and it persuaded me. It is very difficult for me to go against his opinion. I agree that the internet is changing us, but not in ways we think. There are long-term effects of using the internet as often as we do. He states that the internet is changing the way our brains function such as having a shorter attention span, negatively changing the way we critically think, and negatively changing our reading skills.
Thompson also claims that digital tools can help people’s lives become easier and connect with other people through social media.
