Life is full of difficult situations, and everyone can face these difficulties. When people want to achieve their goals, they come across some obstacles. People who are successful are not always the ones who have the best skills. We often see some people born in bad situations, but they never give up. The book named The Pact is about a true story that focuses on three young men .The
Thomas Paine once said, “The real man smiles in trouble, gathers strength from distress, and grows brave by reflection.” In every young man’s life, suffering, challenges, and trials make him stronger, eventually helping him develop into a truly mature man. Similarly, kindness and respect towards others also play a part in becoming a real man. A great example of the development and progression from boyhood to manhood can be found in the book The Chosen, by Chaim Potok. The story follows a boy named Reuven, and the many challenges he face, that slowly help mold him into a true man.
In his book The Promise Chaim Potok leads the reader on a heartbreaking journey full of spiritual conflict and decision. As a sequel to The Chosen, The Promise picks up with Reuven Malter, the main character and a Jewish man now in his mid-twenties, attending Hirsch University, a Jewish seminary in Brooklyn, New York. Reuven keeps his friendship with Danny Saunders, whom he met on a baseball field during his teenage years and later went to college with, even though they now go their separate ways as Reuven becomes a rabbi, and Danny practices psychology. During the summer Reuven dates Rachel Gordon, the niece of Abraham Gordon, a man excommunicated from the Jewish society, and meets Abraham’s son, Michael, a stubborn teen with a mental issue. Also, over the same summer Reuven’s father, David Malter, wrote a controversial book about the Talmud.
The Moral Dilemma Strange dilemma means a different or unique choice that is not pleasant. In his memoir, Shantung Compound, Langdon Gilkey discusses the strange dilemma he has to deal with. “M & L” by Sarah Kokernot is a short story featured in The Best American Short Stories. Kokernot was born in Kentucky and received a Master of Fine Arts in creative writing from University of Nevada, Las Vegas. She is a writer of various short stories and is presently working on her first novel. “M & L” tells the story from the point of view of Miriam and Liam – two good friends; one of which has a past trauma. As I read the story, it was difficult to stay focused on the main plot because of the depth of detail the author provides.
In John Knowles’ novel, A Separate Peace, the main character, Gene Forrester, undergoes a traumatic journey to develop the aspects necessary for coping through adulthood. This novel is a flashback to the year of 1942, when Gene attends his final year at Devon High School, in New Hampshire. Although Gene appears to be Finny’s best friend, he follows in Finny’s steps so that his personality clones to be like Finny’s. Finny exposes new experiences that provoke Gene’s development into adulthood. As Gene engages in new experiences, he soon realizes that he envies Finny’s abilities.
A loving friend turns murderer after his retched jealousness and overanalyzing pushes him to new lows. In A Separate Peace by John Knowles, the true character of Gene Forrester is shown as he narrates his point of view of the story. Gene Forrester is a relatable ever changing, humanistic, and someone who is always in contention. Although at points Gene seems mentally unstable, he is a round, dynamic character that adapts and is generally mentally sound. Gene being the narrator of his own story shows from his perspective just how he views people and their interactions.
In The Chosen written by Chaim Potok one of the greatest bonds in the book is between Danny and Reuven. They demonstrate that being a good friend is not merely about having pleasurable times but to be there for the other through the hard times. Not only that but being able to correct each other without arguments. Moreover, these two unlikely friends meet for the first time as enemies for a baseball game and Danny ends up injuring Reuven nearly blinding him in one eye. Somehow they overcome this and in the end, become great friends.

In the epic, The Odyssey by Homer translated by Robert Fitzgerald create the specific effect of building tension, establishing the setting, create conflict on book IX by using the techniques of dialogue, imagery, and diction. In chapter 9, it talks about how Odysseus tell the story to all Phaeacians and he talks about how he was sailing and he landed on the lotus-eaters island. The people of the island feeds him the lotus and Odysseus and his man forgets everything and gets caught by the kyklops and he keeps them captive. The only way to get off the island is Polyphemos because he's the only one that can move the big boulder away from the only way out. So Odysseus comes up with a plan to give a drink to Polyphemos and he stabs Polyphemos in the eyes and
It’s not dangerous to play with a concussion. You’ve got to sacrifice for the sake of the team. The only way to come out is on a stretcher.” (Culverhouse 68).” Dr. Culverhouse included this quote because it shows where it all goes wrong.
This concussion “injury” should not be an issue because of the bigger problem that has arose. This has changed the game of football to tacking at the feet or leg area. The results are torn ACL’s, MCL’s, and hip injuries. This effectively ends that player’s season
President Dwight D. Eisenhower was building what he termed a “spiritual arsenal” for the defense of America against the atheistic communism of the USSR. Eisenhower’s combination of military acumen and sudden spiritual commitment made him a unique defender of home and faith. As the Cold War waged on, Eisenhower, the former General, had one more battle to wage in defense of his country. This was a war of ideology fought in the hearts and minds of the combatants.
In “Do We Need God in the Pledge” by Jay Sekulow. Sekulow argues that have the word god in the pledge is not about religion but about patriotism. He says that even though “under God” was not in the original Pledge it was implied because Abraham Lincoln wrote the words “this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom…the government of the people, by the people, shall not perish from the Earth in the Gettysburg Address (Sekulow quoting Lincoln) The fact is Sekulow’s article is based on gaining an emotional response.
