This article was written in 1938, the day after Orson Wells’ infamous radio broadcast. The article describes a Halloween special radio play created by Orson Wells. The radio play was based on H. G. Wells’ novel, The War of the Worlds. Orson Wells had adapted the book and put a modern spin on it. The novel, originally written in 1887, tells the story of Martians invading Earth. What the radio station did not anticpate was that listeners tuning in midway through the broadcast did not realize it was fiction. As the headline says, the broadcast caused “mass hysteria across the nation.” The radio play starts with a weather report and then an orchestra concert.
