In the Novel Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston, the main character, Janie, finally breaks away from loveless marriages when she meets Tea Cake, fulfilling her desire of a healthy relationship. The moment Janie married her first husband, Logan Killicks, she wanted to believe that love will come with the marriage. She later realized that love does not come easily, “ She knew now that marriage did not make love. Janie's first dream was dead, so she became a woman” (Hurston 25). She married Joe quickly and left the town in hopes of a new beginning. Joe had potential in the start, but over the years of marriage, he did not live up to the expectations of Janie. Joe treated Janie like property, she did not get to express her feelings or thoughts to Joe, “ Ah just didn’t never git no chance tuh use none of it. You wouldn’t let me” (Hurston 85). Joe grew to lock Janie out of his life, he eventually did not allow Janie to feel like a wife anymore, she wanted to show him her love. Joe dies after 20 years of their marriage, leaving Janie relieved to be left with freedom. She still dwells on the belief of hoping to find another love, but the chances were slim due to her age. Just when Janie thought that the hopes of finding love was over, Tea Cake comes into the picture. He took his time and effort to prove to Janie that his feelings are genuine, “He was about to turn into pure sugar thinking about her” (Hurston). After 2 failed marriages for Janie, no husband of hers has expressed loving feelings.
