In the novel “Their Eyes Were Watching God”, Zora Neale Hurston writes about the struggles of true love between Janie and her three husbands. As the story progresses, Janie believes she has found love, but then she gets disappointed after she is treated wrong. At the beginning of the story, Janie is forced to marry Logan Killicks after her Nanny convinces her that it is for her protection. Janie then tells herself that she will someday grow to love Logan. Hurston states, “Finally out of Nanny’s talk and her own conjectures she made sort of comfort for herself. Yes, she would love Logan after they were married.” (“TEWWG”, Page, 21). But after they had been married for a couple of months, Janie notices how Logan stops being nice and loving to her and how he insults her in hurtful comments. An example of this is when Hurston writes, “Long before the year was up, Janie noticed that her husband had stopped talking in rhymes to her.” (“TEWWG”, Page. 26). Logan insults Janie when the book states, “Ah’ll take holt uh dat ax and come in dere and kill yuh!” (“TEWWG”, Page, 31).
