In the poem, “They Are Hostile Nations,” by Margret Artwood, the overall argument is that people shouldn't fight, we should work together instead and stay peaceful. This poem was written during the cold war, a time when people lived in constant fear of threats. In the poem, Artwood displays these thoughts and feelings and conveys the importance of peace and cooperation as well as a need for each other through things such as connotation, denotation, and tone. In the poem, there are three parts. In the first part, the author talks about the negative impacts on our environment when we fight each other, as well as what we should be and how we do things in the opposite. For example, in the poem, she says, “We should be kind, we should take warning, we should forgive each other,” (5, Atwood). This evidence uses denotation to prove the overall argument by telling us that kindness, and forgiveness are crucial, which are important parts of being able to work together and peacefully solve issues. Part two talks give a desperate plea for the fight to end. It says to stop and look around at the destruction the fighting has caused, and see how the world only gets colder. This section proves my point of the overall argument by using strong connotations. This line emphasizes that people should stop fighting by asking to lower their feeling of anger and hatred and end the fight. We see this through the strong emotions the desperate wish invokes in us, we feel the same way that she does making us empathize and understand that fighting with each other is not the right way.
