In the poem “This is Just to Say” by William Carlos Williams, the gustatory and tactile image of, “They [the plums] were so delicious / so sweet / and so cold,” communicates many ideas. First of all, on a straightforward level, it allows readers to essentially feel and taste the plums for themselves (and recognize just how delectable they must have been), as well as fleshes out the poem a bit more. However, the image also conveys the idea that the narrator is not truly sorry for eating the plums. It’s almost as if he or she is rubbing in how sweet, delicious and cold the plums were to their owner, and right after saying “forgive me,” no less. Essentially, the image reveals a lot more than it first seems about what kind of person the narrator
