In the story of “Truth and beauty: a friendship” Ann Patchett tells the story of her life along with Lucy Grealy’s. She tells the story of their friendship from the beginning to the end. The two women knew of each other, but never formally met. By chance the aspiring writers became roommates and instant best friends. Throughout the story Lucy’s battle with her identity as a writer, and her daily health struggles. After all the hard work and dedication Lucy gains fame from her books and poems. Ann also obtains fame from some of her novels as well. They have different experiences together and apart. Ann shares her life with and without Lucy. With Lucy she shares the endless writing sessions and surgeries. Without Lucy she gets married, divorced, and goes through endless teaching jobs. Though they don’t spend every moment together they send each other endless letters. Letters that keep each other up to date with the lives of one another. The letters are strategically placed throughout the novel that coincides with the different topics of each passage. Ann also reflects on the conflicts of the world around her.
