Learn to Fail [ Feb. 12, 2012], failure is the most significant, but hurtful step towards a successful life. If a person has never honestly dealt with failure, how can they possibly ever improve or move forward? It is important to learn and be able to solve problems in society, whether it is for academic or not.
Response to “I Just Wanna Be Average" by Mike Rose Had Rose and her mother been educated enough, they could have a voice to raise concerns about Rose’s marks. The author seems to suggest that the teachers were responsible for his underperformance. The author feels that parental and teacher responsibility on his part could have helped understanding what discipline is before going to college. However, it is also possible that he did not try hard enough to be disciplined. Nonetheless, Rose is right that environment plays a bigger role in what an individual eventually becomes in adult life (Munns et all, 2013).
How to Escape the Community College Trap In the article “How to Escape the Community College Trap” written by Ann Hulbert. She explains her thoughts and opinions on community college. Her primary topic of discussion is about a program through a community college in New York called asap. Asap is a program that gives opportunities to lower income students. She explores how it compares to regular community colleges and ivy schools such as Harvard.
“Conquering the Freshman Fear of Failure” an article written by David L Kirp is a piece that illustrates the link between fear and doing bad in school. David Kirp writes about the psychological result of giving students an environment where they will set themselves up for failure. He tries to promote the scientific study where it mentions that intellect and genetics have very little correlation. Kirp believes when you put students in a discouraging environment and plant failure in their minds, nothing can be achieved. He grabs his audience’s attention by channelling into their sympathy and bringing credibility to his argument.
This is where failure comes in. Sherry proclaims that we need to recognize that this fear of failure is a positive teaching tool. To make this tool work, teachers and parents need to accept that if the student doesn’t learn the material, they must follow through with their promises of flunking. After teaching many college courses and working in many different college campuses Randall Beeman knows how to fail as a college student because he has witnessed it in college students many times. I agree with Mr. Beeman and his article.
Are Too Many People Going To College In this essay, Charles Murray is basically talking about that a student should learn most of the information in there high school career. Then most likely already learned what they should learn what they teach in college and it might not be necessary for them to even go to college. Charles Murray also mentioned that the most important knowledge should be learned in the K-8 grades.
In the article “Want To Get Into College? Learn To Fail” by Angel B. Perez the main idea was that colleges want to know the real you,the imperfect you not the just the great things you’ve accomplished over the year ,but also the failure you had to overcome. The reason why they want to know this is to see if you can overcome failing a class or two just to how you can you handle this, because life is not easy and healthy,family and money sometimes can get in the way of things but the goal is to make you succeed. Another thing I learned that I think is a main point is that parents are the ones pressuring their children to be perfect. So much that they didn 't want their child to take a risk in a class if there was a possibility for failure.
This type of belief is very common in educational institutions such as high schools, colleges and universities where students earn their grades based on how many correct answers they make or how little they make mistakes during examinations. Although it cannot be denied that having such an incentive system is necessary, it can also backfire the original intention which is to educate the students with skills and knowledge required. Students who have never failed in their classes might not be comfortable with potential failures in the future and hence, are reluctant to try out any risky moves in their lives. In his article, van Oech talks about a friend of his who had not found a job after graduation. As talented and accomplished as she was in her college days according to van Oech, she had difficulties getting a job since she is not brave enough to face failures in her job interviews (Oech 5).

Elona Kalaja Professor Eleni Saltourides ENG 101 Critical Analysis Paper February 21, 2018 Flunking vs Students In the article, “In Praise of the F Word” Mary Sherry argues that flunking students is a method that has been effective in the past and is still effective todays day, and anyone needs to see is as a positive teaching tool. Sherry indicates that flunking students is a method that motivates students to study more and to be more responsible for what is their responsibility. Students challenge is not to get an A or B, but to succeed or to fail.
We have all encountered some degree of failure in our lives, some worse than others. No one is or ever will be a perfect human being. Failure is certain in our lives among all questionable events. Times of failures are events we can learn from even in the smallest ways. Whether it be a failing grade, not making a sports team, or not winning a game, there is always a lesson to be learned.
Angel B. Perez in the article “Want to Get Into College? Learn to fail” argues that colleges aren’t always looking for perfect student, or students that scores good. Perez supports his argument by explaining to his readers that perfection does not exist. He also tells the reader that just because we make errors in high school doesn't really mean that it’s going to define us in the future. The author’s purpose is to point out the benefits of going into college, in order to show the reader that perfection isn’t what colleges look for.
In Kurt Wiesenfeld’s article “Making the Grade”, he address the issue that students want a higher grade than they deserve. He goes on to prove this be by giving examples of previous students that he has had and what can happen when students get the grades that they want and not what they deserve. In Wiesenfeld’s article he states that about ten percent of students that take his class do not care about their grades until final grades are over. “You might groan and moan, but you accepted it as the outcome of your efforts or lack thereof,” Wiesenfeld stated.
