Should College Athletes Be Paid?
Many colleges, including the NCAA, believe that college athletes should not be paid. They think that college athletes should focus on getting better and on school and shouldn't have to worry about pay. The NCAA believes that paying for their college pays all on its own, when in reality, many college athletes have to schedule their school around their practice when it should be the other way around. “A key point as to why the NCAA would not want to pay athletes is to maintain the amateur status of its reputation.”(Goldman 1989-1990). If the NCAA didn't make so much money off of these athletes then it would be easier to understand why they won't pay them. Most college athletes don't even get the education they were promised. As in they don’t ever have the time to actually sit and think about their school and study, for college athletes it's all about the games and practices. It takes a lot of skill to actually get good grades while doing the sport you love, but even then you won't have enough time to get a job to pay for expenses, food and equipment. The NCAA makes around $6 million yearly, but still refuses to pay the athletes that make that money for them. Considering that college games are just as popular as the professional games, the NCAA and many other college require you to be in college for about 2 years before you can even think of going
