In a 2015 article titled, “The Homosexual Agenda is Destroying the Black Man”, Marque-Anthony, a staff writer for ‘ThyBlackMan’ -- an online blog that aims to ‘unite Black men’ wrote,
“There is a strategic and deliberate effort by the powers that be who control the media [...] to emasculate men (specifically African American[s]), reduce our roles and impact in society and create a new class of effeminate young men who are lost and who think their behavior is normal.”

The man is very happy to have met her again and reminisces on past memories until other men in the area say he’s “gay as hell” for liking a transwoman. The man tries to reject their claims by saying, "Y'all niggas fuck guys up in here anyway!" But, an older man responds, "That ain't gay. That's just jail. You was on the outside fucking booty holes." This particular exchange showcases how queer hood among Black men is not discussed, unless someone’s sexuality and masculinity is being mocked for not aligning with heteronormativity. Moreover, how if sexuality is not being talked about in a heteronormative way, it should not be addressed by anyone since gayness is understood as a threat to the maintenance of Black masculinity because of homosexuality’s frequent conflation with the feminization of men in some African American circles. These cultural scripts about Black sexuality are tied to the environments in which this discourse has been produced. Some spheres that have constructed these dynamics include barber shops, the church, and Black media outlets like BET. These spaces permit and encourage performances of toxic hyper-masculinity to reaffirm the authority and power of Black men which is challenged in spheres where Blackness is not dominant.
