How this came about is when his boss, Hubert Harrison, wanted more black activities in the Negro radical movement. Eager for such an opportunity, McKay gather many well know Negro activists of artists and non-artists to expand Garvey’s United Negro Improvement Association. McKay obtains many stories, such as, learning about W.E.B DuBois’ “cold, acid hauteur of spirit in person. (158)”

After the narrator goes with Sonny to the Jazz club, he meets Sonny’s friends and sees how they appreciate him and his music in a way he never did. He then begins to see the importance of music to his brother and makes a discovery about himself and Sonny. He listens to Sonny play and is delighted and starts to accept his brothers wanting to be a musician. The narrator realizes he was wrong to try and make Sonny change and he sees the power of Sonny’s blues as he is playing. The acceptance over Sonny’s dream not only strengthened their relationship, but also helped them gain a better understanding of each other.
The narrator keeps this in mind and tries to sway Sonny to a path he feels is right for him. Sonny wants to go into music however the narrator feels it would be
Although both characters were different they found an understanding by trying to feel what each other were feeling. Also by coping with their tough childhood and feelings together without directly communicating. Sonny wanted so desperately to please his brother, but couldn’t find a way to avoid Jazz but still get that feeling he craved. Sonny was clearly disappointed and embarrassed by his choice of actions and despite what anyone said, he realized the choice he made was poor and it was time to follow his dream. At the end, the narrator realizes why Sonny turned to drugs in the first place.
Getting into music had a huge impact on Sonny’s life, and that being with the introduction to drugs and his place to get away. All Sonny really wants to do is escape from Harlem, and he does so through music alone. As a young child, Sonny was struck with the horrible tragedy of his mother’s death. Any young child would have an extremely difficult time dealing with the loss of their mother.
Sonny aspired to be a musician because it motivated him to express his feelings through the music. Within playing Sonny could tell how he was feeling without ever having to leave his comfort zone. The addiction to drugs Sonny suffered had nothing to do with Sonny being a musician it had to do with Sonny being able to express his emotions in ways he was incapable of when he wasn’t
Sonny was free-spirited, adventurous, and artistic. The narrator (Sonny’s brother) implies that Sonny and his brother grew up in Harlem, a less than impressive section of New York. It is obvious that Sonny aspires to leave Harlem; his reason being that he is not learning anything in school and he was unhappy with the environment he was living in (453). Sonny was not inherently a bad person; he only wanted more for his life than simply going to school and living in an unremarkable neighborhood. It was as if something was missing in his life
There was an unspoken hate between them and he did not like the way Sonny carried himself or the people he was friends with. He blames this, and the way Sonny is living, on his music claiming, "his music seemed to be merely an excuse for the life he led" (83). The narrator did his best to mend his broken relationship with Sonny, but it only resulted in a fight and Sonny said that "he was dead as far as I [the narrator] was concerned" (83). The narrator was fearful that Sonny would be just like all the other musicians around Harlem and the surrounding cities. After the disagreement he did not talk to Sonny, even following the news his arrest, until after his little girl, Grace died.
He couldn’t understand him because the best way for Sonny to communicate his feelings was through music, something that he refused to listen to up until he had no choice but to. This turning point shows just how bad things can get, and just how resilient a sibling bond can be. That even though they were on the verge of never speaking to each other ever again, they were able to find common ground and go in a more positive direction towards a stronger
This particular paragraph in “Sonny’s Blues” is incredibly important to the development and resolution of the story. At this moment, the narrator is watching his brother play the piano for the first time. He is overwhelmed by the sensations he receives from the music and also gains insight on his brother’s life. The narrator realizes that music is how Sonny expresses his feelings and how he copes with the struggles of everyday life. Without this paragraph, we lose the breakthrough moment the narrator has regarding his relationship with his brother.
When the narrator accompanies Sonny to the nightclub to listen to him play his music; Sonny’s music portrays his wisdom as he plays about his brother’s frustrations with the trials and sufferings they both endured. Sonny’s artful playing of the blues opens the narrator’s heart to listen genuinely. If one listens to what lies on the inside that is the key to finding oneself. Joseph Flibbert states in the article “Sonny’s Blues” Overview, “In the music he hears, he sees his mother’s face, and that of his little girl … The powerful incantations of Sonny’s art reaches his soul, and for the first time, he listens to the dark voice within”.

The older brother’s wife, Isabel, helped Sonny recover from his addiction as well. Sonny was interested in playing Jazz music on the piano. This eventually took over his life, as he was sent away to stay with Isabel and her parents to keep him out of doing drugs. They had a piano there on which he played every moment he could, constantly filling the house with music. Sonny started disappearing from school.
Sonny is the main character in the story who has been through a lot in life. He wanted to be a jazz musician. After going through all the trouble, Sonny was a great musician and he loved to play music more than anything. He used music to escape from all the bad things around him. Most black people grow up in the slums and it is extremely hard to make it out of there without getting stuck on something bad.
