One of the most controversial topics in society today is whether or not student athletes should be paid by their respective universities. Playing that sport is essentially a full time job, considering the time it consumes. These athletes are not able to get a job and therefore have a much harder time than normal students when it comes to producing revenue, this is why college athletes should be paid. Another driving factor is that big schools bring in hundreds of millions of dollars every year from sports, but only give out a few million dollars in scholarships. The NCAA being so forceful about preventing college athletes from being paid indicates to everybody that if this rule was not in place, players in fact would be paid. It makes more sense for these sort of rules to be established on a conference to conference level rather than one overarching, some say corrupt, organization making rules that try to play God. The best system is a system where each team is able to make decisions for themselves. All of the football and basketball conferences would be able to make their own rules on the payment of players. This would also get rid of the “everybody should be treated equal” mindset that this country has.
