One of the biggest debates of the twenty-first century when it comes to the NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) is whether student-athletes should be paid. Many fans have their own opinions about the matter. College athletes have a lot of things to manage when in season and just in general. From keeping their grades up to making sure they get reps at practice are just a few of the things that athletes have to worry about during the school year. In my opinion, I believe athletes should be paid based on the money the school brings in and endorsements. If the player can pull in enough attention to get a shoe deal or sponsorship, they should be able to take the deal without having to worry about the NCAA cracking down on them. The coaches get paid based on how well the team plays. What if the team decides to just stop playing in the middle of a game and they lose. It stops people from attending the games and the coaches lose valuable money-making chances. The players put on a show for the fans and also compete so they can have a championship under their name, but they receive nothing except commemoration and cheers. The coaches receive nice checks they can use to do whatever they want. The last claim is that teams are on the verge of unionizing. Some teams are tempting to go on strikes to get paid by the NCAA so they can do what they want. They aren’t getting the opportunities that the average student could get because they aren’t able to get steady jobs because they don’t have the time. If the schools just paid the players, and it doesn’t even have to be a lot, they wouldn’t have this problem. The NCAA is just holding the money for other unimportant reasons.
