Analysis: Why College Athletes Should Be Paid

College athletes should be paid because colleges make money off of merchandise that people buy because of a college athlete, college athletes can support their families, and because their coaches get paid.

According to the article by Gerencer,”...member schools make about $6 billion from ticket sales and merchandise sales to regular season games,” (Gerencer, 2016). People buy merchandise because of college students. For example, someone would buy a jersey because an athletes name is on it. Players should also get paid because of the amount of money they have. Some college athletes aren't as rich as others, so colleges should give college athletes money so they have a decent amount of money. A college athlete would be putting a lot of energy and work into playing a sport. Some athletes families aren't as rich as others either. If colleges give athletes money, athletes will probably send some of their money back home with their families. They should be able to get money so they can afford to live correctly, have a decent meal, and send money to their families.

The author stated, “NCAA coaches make an average of $1.64 million a year,” (Gerencer, 2016). If coaches get paid, shouldn't the athletes get paid too? Coaches teach and direct teams, but the athletes are the ones who put in a ridiculous amount of effort into playing. Coaches aren't doing as much as athletes are, because athletes are the ones who are actually participating and playing games! If coaches get paid 1.64 dollars a year, it is only fair that athletes get paid too.

In conclusion, college athletes should get paid because colleges use the athlete's name on merchandise, athletes will be able to help their family if they don't have enough money and support themselves, and because coaches get paid instead of college
