I believe that student athletes should be paid because they dedicate an excessive amount of time to sports, miss out on a degree because of monetary issues, and bring in an excessive amount of money. In the first place, I believe collegiate level athletes should be paid because they are dedicating an excessive amount of time to sports. In the article ”Should athletes be paid to play” Jared Walch states, “According to an NCAA survey conducted in 2011 Division I football players average 43 hours a week...This means that on top of classwork and homework, athletes are working a full time job.” This proves that students are dedicating a majority of their time to sports causing them not to have time to fulfill obligations of a job. Due to these athletes participating in these sports, they spend too much time practicing to be able to obtain a job. WIthout a job these students will have no source of income; therefore, they cannot support themselves. Walch states “Many players cite financial hardship as the reason that they declare early for the draft, and who can blame them?” He also states “Paying athletes could actually keep them in school.” This goes to show if student athletes were being paid, they would be more willing to stay attending school and graduate. If being paid, student athletes may finish degrees on a chance that sports don’t work out for them. This could also increase graduation rates as well as financial statuses. Paying student athletes would help financial hardship and motivate students to stay in
