There is currently nothing systematically in place to provide funds to the sports athletes who generate so much for the universities, and the revenue continues to climb for the NCAA, as they claim a scholarship is sufficient enough even the playing field amongst universities and their athletes and stress that the uproar will change college sports forever. The public has seen the exploitation of these athletes and are asking questions regarding the legitimacy of the structure and are now demanding these athletes be compensated for there hard work. So as the money skyrockets for the NCAA, the athletes are left needing amendments to the power structure that has held them down for so long; in order to change this Congress must step in make sure
Should college athletes be paid, or should they just be happy with the scholarship they are given? In the article “Why College Athletes Should Be Paid”, the author Tyson Hartnett claims that college athletes deserve to be paid. In the article, he states, “A $25,000 scholarship may seem like a lot of money, but it really only covers the basics” (Hartnett par. 5). Hartnett feels that college athletes deserve a salary because they are “typically dead broke” (Hartnett par. 9), even though they bring lots of attention and money to their schools.
These athletes should get paid as if it is their job since they devote the same amount of time towards it as they would a job. The fact that scholarships do not cover all expenses for every athlete is one reason why college athletes should get
College Varsity Athletes Should be Paid In this paper, I argue that college varsity athletes should be paid for playing sports that bring in revenue. In particular, College football and basketball because they bring in the majority of the revenue for the schools. The revenue accomplished by college sports programs continues to increase, due to the growth in interest of the NCAA basketball tournament and the college football playoffs (Berry III, Page 270). Throughout the past few years, one of the main topics debated in college sports is whether or not the athletes should be paid.
College Athlete Compensation Why are we letting college athletes go hungry? Did you know college athletes put about 40 hours a week into their sports and they never really get paid (college athletes deserve). Even though they make millions of dollars a year for their universities they don't get a dime (hoop dream). College athletes should get compensated because their scholarships don't fully cover their student needs. The NCAA refutes most of these arguments by saying their student athletes, but with the work they put in shouldn't students go first (hoop dream).UConn the winner of the NCAA championship last year had a graduation rate of just 8% for their male athletes.
Are they students or employees? They spend more time with the sport than in school. Student athletes should be acknowledged for their performances. College athletes should be paid to play because they bring money into the school, advertisement, and they perform the same tasks of pros. College kids bring in thousands of dollars every game day.
Mike says”Students all over the world work hard at the sport that true love and don’t get a lot in return for it”. While college athletes may not exactly be employees, they are more than just students. Consider the life of a student-athlete, though. The average Division I football player dedicates over 43hours per week to his sport, meaning that he spends more than a typical American work-week training and playing football, in addition to his class work. Their work, which generates exorbitant amounts of money year in and year out, deserves Compensation.
Getting Paid to Play a Sport in College? College athletes have been playing inter-collegiate sports without pay since 1852 there is no reason to change that now. College athletes should not get paid because the previous college athletes did not get paid, the grind without pay makes you a better person and teaches you not to take anything for granted, and teaches you not to expect an award for everything good you do in life. College athletes should not get paid based on the simple fact that it would be detrimental to college athletics and why they are played.
One student Logan Klaproth believes, “They[student athletes] should be paid because they advertise the sports teams and merchandise for the school yet the athletes are not getting paid a single cent. Furthermore, since they are paying for college at the same time being paid for playing sports would help them pay student loans and their college
College athletes should be happy that they do not have to pay for all of their gear plus school, books, and dorm. They get a free education. Athletes aren’t forced to take the scholarship that they get offered to them. Therefore if the athlete gets a scholarship
After graduating from High School one may choose to further his or her education through college. People do this for many reasons. Some people do it for professional benefits, while others do it for sports athletics. This paper will be focusing on those who do go to college for athletic benefits. Specifically, this is focusing on how these college athletes do not get paid and why they should be paid.
Taking a look at the average college student, should they be paid for what they are studying? Probably not. Then why should college athletes be paid? They shouldn 't get paid just because of their athletic ability. They shouldn 't be paid because they are students, not professionals.
For example, if it wasn’t for basketball players, Gonzaga University would need to spend a lot more money on building a name recognition to students not located on the West. Everyone has their own opinion, but mine is that college athletes should be paid. The amount of time they put into their sport, the amount of money everyone else is making off of them, and their overall importance to the school are only three of a myriad of reasons why they should be paid. These athletes are not only students, but employees to their universities. They are a core member of many university’s marketing team.
Imagine if you were part of the reason for a collegiate team’s success in win and filling up stadiums, but not having enough money to get your necessities. That is what’s happening to a lot of student-athletes, even some pros have commented on this idea. First off, most college athletes barely have money as it is, so if they run short on money, they aren’t able to call their parents or whoever they lived with to send money to them, then they can’t eat or even worst, they have nowhere to live. Many NFL or other professional athletes would agree that college players should get paid mostly because of lack of free time. “I would love for a regular student, for just one semester, to have a student-athlete schedule during the season and show me
A growing debate in the National Collegiate Athletic Association is whether or not student athletes should be paid. The controversy began in 2011 after three hundred coaches and athletes signed a petition to pay college-level athletes, and since then other athletes have made several more arguments. The NCAA has rightfully denied all of the requests, saying they include too much. To pay student athletes could be hugely expensive for colleges, especially because they would not only pay for each athlete’s degree and equipment, but also provide a salary and give bonuses revenue for tournaments. Moreover, college athletes should not be paid because there is not enough money, it takes away a student’s focus from schoolwork, and not every athlete is guaranteed a professional career after graduating; however it is argued that it they are already paid in a way.
