Jack Reacher is set in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and follows the storyline of the 9th book in the Jack Reacher series by Lee Child called One Shot. Reacher, played by Tom Cruise, is a drifter, of sorts. A retired and decorated war veteran with 13 years of service under his belt, Reacher left the Army to go on a walkabout of sorts in order to experience the America that he had spent his life defending. He has no house, car, phone, or desire to spend more than a week or two in any location. He travels by bus and uses cash. Though set in modern times, Reacher is a veritable ancient Ronin warrior who wanders about the US taking in the sites and tourist attractions and avenging the defenseless. In this Reacher story, a young Army veteran, with whom Reacher briefly served, is framed for the brutal sniper slaying of five seemingly random people. My audience in the theater were pretty rowdy at the beginning of the film just after the trailers, but the first few minutes, that show methodical man with a high-powered sniper rifle fixing his crosshairs on the heads of young women and children. At which point, the rowdy audience members fell into a stunned silence as the killer on the screen proceeded to kill five innocent people, mostly women, by shooting them in the head from over 300 yards away. There is no music during this sequence, or in the film as a whole. The only sounds are the deafening gunshots and the screams of a frightened crowd. Right off the bat, we know that this film isn’t messing around. It’s not going to gloss over or glorify gun violence. It’s going to get us as close to the real horror as possible.
