Different Perspectives The movie I chose to see was The Hours, which was directed by Stephen Daldry. The plot of the movie was created around the lives of three women, who appear unhappy and depressed. But what is interesting is that each character is placed in a different era. In the film, we see the lives of these women and their struggles within a single day frame, which alternate back and forth to each other’s stories. So basically, it is through their experiences and feelings that we notice their own perspectives on what makes each woman suffer. The film does not follow a linear perspective and all three stories are mixed up. For example, throughout the film we are faced with three distinctive stories that constantly alternate. We start with Virginia Woolf, played by Nicole Kidman, who drowns herself right at the beginning of the movie. Richard, Clarissa, Laura, and Virginia had a moment of heightened awareness. For example, Richard realized he was staying alive because of Clarissa, which was making him unhappy; he chose to end his life and to end his suffering. Clarissa as well became aware that she was not happy because she was concerned with making others happy, which she decided to change by the end of the film. On the other hand, Laura becomes aware that her lifestyle is slowly killing her, which is the reason she decides to abandon her family. Along the same lines, Virginia realizes that she was never going to escape the life she was living due to her illness, so she ends her life in order to escape.
