Sitting under a tree shortly after his release from Shawshank, Red reads a letter from his dear friend Andy Dufrense. In a very ambitious way, Andy writes, “Hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things, and no good thing ever dies. I will be hoping that this letter finds you and finds you well your good friend Andy.” Violating his parole Red travels to Texas then Mexico, and is reunited with his friend Andy. Frank Darabont’s The Shawshank Redemption shows the hope and determination of a man to make his dreams a reality. The film’s characters, and situations assist by painting the picture to what the main character went through emotionally and physically. This essay will begin by discussing several arguments in the film The Shawshank Redemption. It will then present these arguments from various opinions and show how they connect to the film. This essay argues that through self-determinism shown in The Shawshank Redemption, nothing can stop someone from obtaining what they want. The film The Shawshank Redemption directed by Frank Darabont is a drama from the nineties. The film goes over many themes including some that are considered to be very controversial. Some of these themes include corruption within the legal system, brutality, and freedom. The film is based off the original book Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption by Stephen King in 1982. While the movie is over two decades old now, the themes still bring up points that are relevant today.
