Analytical Essay: The Physics Of Basketball

1006 Words5 Pages

Basketball is a sport thousands of people worldwide watch and enjoy but very few of those people know how much physics the sport contains. Basketball consists of running, jumping, dribbling a ball, shooting and many more things and every single one of these things contains physics. People who play basketball are constantly running up and down the court and this has physics. Some of the main points of the physics of running consist of the forces generated during running, the path traveled by runners center or mass, and the physics of peoples arms swinging while they run. (real world physics problems , 2009) The forces generated during running act on someone running as they push of the ground with their feet. When people push of the ground …show more content…

The way a ball responds and moves is all about momentum and energy. (connect a million minds , 2010). The movement of bouncing a ball involves both kinetic and potential energy. (connect a million minds , 2010). When the ball hits the court it makes a sound the sound is a result of a transfer of energy. (connect a million minds , 2010). The ground also absorbs some of the energy from the impact of the ball and the energy in the ball is transferred to the court. (connect a million minds , 2010). When you drop a basketball it bounces back up thanks to gravity and if your hand pushes it back down it creates another force against the ball and depending in how strong that force is it will come up that much faster or that much slower. Shooting a basketball also contains physics. From the beginning a basketball player setting up for a shot off the dribble creates inertia. (Machin, 2013). There is physics in the arch and the backspin of the ball as well. A shot can be missed by putting to little arch or having to much it all depends of how a person shots and the backspin is also very valuable it all depends on how much backspin you use because when it hits the backboard or rim its going to counter act thanks to physics. (Machin,
