Abortion An abortion is the deliberate termination of a fetus during pregnancy usually before the embryo is fully developed and ready for independent life. Some are against abortion, and others argue that it should be the woman’s right to make these types of decisions regarding her body. People who are against against abortion state that abortion kills innocent life and is unsafe to the birth giver. Others who believe in the woman’s consent believe in the right to physical integrity, right to privacy, and safety. When the surgery is performed under a safe, hygienic, environment with well-trained personnel, abortion is an extremely safe procedure. However, just like any other medical treatment/surgery, abortion is considered unsafe when set in circumstances performed by an unskilled personnel and an uncleanly environment. People who state that abortion is not safe for the birthgiver may say that it is more dangerous to undergo an abortion that give childbirth. To argue that claim, less than 1% of all abortion patients in the U.S. experience any complications with the abortion procedure and the risk of death is ten times lower as associated with childbirth according to the GuttMacher Institute statistics. People may state abortion kills innocent lives and while that might be an evoking claim, it is not true. According to the landmark decision made by the United States Supreme Court regarding abortion rights, the word “person” does not include the unborn/fetus and does not have equal status until it can exist outside of the mother’s womb.
