The Civil War began on April 12th, 1861, at Fort Sumter, as a result of tensions between the North and the South. The South's dependence on slavery and the racial hierarchy it created forced a divide between the North and South. In addition to this, President Lincoln's opposition to the expansion of slavery put the Southerner's way of life at risk. The debates also fueled the fire of secession.
