The Greensboro Sit-Ins You are one of the many people to enter your local Woolworth’s to join the protests. That was a very common situation in February of 1960. Sit-Ins became a highly influential factor in Civil Rights. They were created and popularized in Greensboro, North Carolina in 1960, during the Greensboro Sit-Ins. The Greensboro Sit-Ins were a series of protests led by four young black college students that were committed to equality in civil rights.
The 1950s were full of important achievements for African Americans. The United States Supreme Court had recently declared state laws establishing separate public schools for black and white students unconstitutional in the Brown v. Board of Education case. However, segregation, and racial acts still took place every day. One of the most predominant events that took place in the 1950’s was the murder of fourteen-year-old Emmett Till. Emmett Till’s murder took place before the Civil Rights Movement had fully skyrocketed, his death invigorated the Civil Rights Movement and motivated people like Martin Luther King Jr., and Rosa Parks.
Before the 60s, Brown v. Board of Education was passed which led to a couple of reforms in de jure segregation, but not heavily mandated by the government. President John F. Kennedy could not do much for the movement due to his desire to keep his image in front of Southern Democrats and his lack of popular mandate in Congress. There was a groundwork set for the movement, but it had not entered its most energized form. However, when the 1960s hit, there were changes that occurred in the entire setting of the movement. The 1960s was a difficult time for America. African-Americans were seeking to be become officially free and to secure the right to vote through the civil rights movement. The White Governor Wallace and his allies drew in every available resource to stem the tide of progress on segregation. While Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. being of colored skin, wanted to advance this progress to secure blacks their rights. The main issue was on whether to keep the statues que on segregation or change it for every human being has their rights.
During the 1960’s, the Civil Rights Movement was a big topic and controversy with all of the United States. It was quite clear that African Americans did not get treated the same way that whites did. It had been ruled that it was constitutional to be “separate but equal”, but African Americans always had less than the whites did. For example, the schools that they had were run down, and had very little classrooms, books, and buses. Martin Luther King had a large role in the Civil Rights Movement, as did Malcolm X, and others.
According to my research, students back in the 1960s played a critical role in developing the Savannah State College; into what is now known as the illustrious Savannah State University. Students from the 1960s dealt with the hardship of going to school, while the civil rights movement was active. Due to the fact of the civil rights movement being in act, it brought various problems into the school system. On the other hand, it strengthens the students and united them.

Segregation was still apart of US custom, black people were still denied seating with white guests at diners and public restaurants. Four students from Greensboro, North Carolina decided to have stay seated in their seats and in turn sparked a revolution of "sit-ins" all around the country. News spread of another bold defiance from white supremacy and support came running in, even support from white allies who decided no longer to be just witnesses to this oppression. A newer younger civil rights movement was birthed from these young men, but with this movement, there also came pressures against them from within the black community. From the black older cook who reprimanded the boys for seating, blaming their defiance for the employment troubles facing black workers, to the older black figures who opposed the students actions for sometimes altruistic, sometimes selfish reasons.
In the 1950's, people was separated by the color of their skin. If you were African American you could not use the same bathroom, use the same water fountain, nor attend the same school as white people. Segregation caused alot of friction in the world, especially in the southern states. African Americans had enough of being treated differently just because their skin was not white. Blacks decided to stop being silence and put up a fight.
In the United States during the 1950s the federal government was forced to establish federal regulations to put an end to the segregation of society in the south along with the north. In the northern states segregation was a type of segregation call de facto segregation of which is segregation based on unwritten custom or by tradition. This was rather different than segregation in the south which was known as de jure segregation being the Jim Crow laws enforced segregation by law. These southern state governments however felt that the federal government could not control the segregation of African Americans in the states. Thus the southern states used many unsuccessful strategies to resist the compliance that included “The Southern Manifesto”,the creation of the “White Citizens Councils”,the conflict that erupted in Little Rock, and the James Meredith issue at the all-white University of segregation
Segregation formed between 1849 and 1964, splitting whites from black into public and private places. Black Americans did not receive the same privileges or opportunities as White Americans. However, many civil rights activists worked to remove segregation and provide those affected with more options. Martin Luther King Jr. is one of these leaders. Martin Luther King advocated for several tensions, including police violence, in his fight against segregation, which shows that unfair laws should not be upheld.
In the early 1960s, race had become the biggest issue in the South. Many African Americans were being sprayed down with water hoses just because of the color of their skin. Many bombings had taken place, one in particular, the 16th Street Baptist Church. The church was bombed, ultimately because the church was home to African Americans. This society was no longer about right and wrong, but had turned into hatred for the opposite race.
