The Most Significant Consequence of the Printing Press The printing press was an amazing invention by Johannes Gutenberg in 1440. The printing press would take an inked surface and stamp it to a cloth or paper therefore transferring the ink. This allowed so many things to happen, such as maps, books, etc to be mass produced. Because Johannes Gutenberg invented the printing press, literacy growth skyrocketed giving so many people opportunities. The map on Document 5 shows the effect from the printing press on religion. During the 1500’s almost the entire continent of Europe was Catholic except for a few places. After the printing press was invented and books were mass produced it allowed religion to spread all throughout Europe. Now instead of it just being mainly Catholic, now there was a widespread variety including protestant, catholic, and mixed protestant and Catholic. The amount of books that were produced after it was invented was in the hundreds of millions. Books could take over several months to be written by hand, and a book the size of a Bible could take several years. Once the printing press came into play it allowed so many books to be produced within a day or two. This was ludacris during this time because it hasn’t been seen before. With this amount of books being produced the prices of books lowered by a lot, allowing more people to be able to purchase these books with the reasonable prices.
