It gives the impression of being there in the moment: an immersion that can feel captivating. And yet it also makes the viewer feel as if he or she has a bird’s eye view. While many may look at this photo and think nothing of it, there is still much to be gained in learning more about this photograph and the elements that constitute it. The mountains, which are along the sides of the photo, protrude deep into the sky and the valley, imposing their status onto the rest of the picture. The lines of the picture bring the viewer deeper into the center of the image. Following the lines that the picture provides can give the feeling that one is traveling into the valley. Ansel Adams put painstaking effort into his photographs. He was known to make his own prints of the photographs by hand, some reports say he even made up to 13,000, (Young 11). He also used his photography to advance the cause of conservation and bring light to certain moral issues, such as his photographs of internment camps. He was an avid conservationist, using his photos to progress the cause; His work even played a large part in establishing a national park: Kings Canyon National Park (Young 11). One can see how this photograph was not just a simple click of a button. Ansel Adams used his eye, and his knowledge of photography to portray an image of nature that portrays its imposing beauty. Learning about the colors, shapes and lines, and the artist can bring one to both appreciate and understand Winter Storm. People often find no use in analyzing art, thinking that nothing can come from it. This essay argues against such a perception of negativity by the points made in it and the greater appreciation gleaned from it.
