Tucker Keller Mrs. Heller English II 1 February 2023 People are Alike and Different “Marigolds” by Eugenia Collier written in 1969 is a short story about a girl named Lizabeth that lives in a rural area. Miss Lottie, an old lady that plants marigolds, one day Lizabeth destroys them all. Since that day Lizabeth matured and now acts her age. “Raymond’s Run” is a short story written in 1972 by Toni Cade Bambara. The sister and brother named Squeaky and Raymond run all day. While Squeaky runs she also has to take care of her brother. Lizabeth and Squeaky have many similarities and differences. Lizabeth and Squeaky have many similarities. Both are caring towards their family. Everyday Squeaky has to watch her brother even if she doesn’t feel like it. All she wants to do when they run is worry about her breathing and running form. If anyone wants to do anything to Raymond “they have to come by her” (Bambara Line 11). Lizabeth’s family is in need of money and her dad can’t find a job to get money. When Lizabeth was trying to fall asleep she heard her dad crying. While he was crying Lizabeth felt his “harsh, painful, despairing sobs” (Collier Par. 43). Squeaky is rude even if come up to her nicely. If you approach her the wrong way she’ll “knock you down” (Bambara Line 13) instead of talking to you. Lizabeth is always rude no matter what you do to her. Even when you are nice to her she’ll be rude. Lizabeth asked kids to grab rocks to throw at Miss Lottie’s marigolds.
