Analyzing Kerry Dirk's Essay Navigating Genres

Until reading this Module, Module 2 in Writing About Texts – ENC1102 Spring 2018, did I ever think about genres in the manner it has been presented. Genre by my internal dictionary was applicable to a more focused aspect of a given method. As used in Kerry Dirk’s essay “Navigating Genres”, country music by my definition is a genre of music like contemporary is a genre for design or better yet, abstract is a genre or style of art. Never once did I step back and think about communication at a higher level; the 30-thousand foot view as I like to think. From this vantage point, all forms of communication can be specified as a genre. I find learning through others eyes a very useful and nesting manor of educating. Throughout my twenty plus years of employment, I’ve found learning becomes most impactful and resonates more for me, when I see through others eyes. In this essay I want to share with you my analysis of Dirk’s essay on rhetorical genres, what genres I tend to follow and their key attributes, and lastly I’ll touch on what are the important components of advertising and verbal address. My goal is to provide you, my classmates, with my perspective and insight, whether it differ yours or not, into how others/I might perceive and consider the same topics. Businesses live and die on the success of their advertising campaigns. If you are unable to get the word out about your offering AND persuade people to partake, the life of your business will be short lived. Most importantly in advertising is the ability to impact those intended and affected by your advertisement at the best possible advertising rate. You can get your commercial in front of millions of viewers with a Super Bowl commercial, but if you’re selling senior living to your viewers, you just spent $1M+ for a single advertisement that might be applicable to a minor fraction of the viewership.
