Name: Brianna Cohort: UCLA Question: Hammurabi’s Code: Was it just? Hammurabi and his Codes Introduction Did you know Hammurabi created the first set of laws. Hammurabi was a king of Mesopotamia. Hammurabi’s codes were laws.
For instance, if a surgeon has saved a man’s life, he receives 10 shekels of silver as a reward. Also, if a man has knocked out the eye of a free man, his eye shall be knocked out as a punishment. These examples clearly show that Hammurabi’s Code was just because it’s rewarding people for doing good things, and punishing people for doing bad things. Although a few laws in Hammurabi’s Code may seem unjust because they are too extreme, but bad crimes, deserve a harsh punishment.
Was Hammurabi's Code of Laws just? Hammurabi’s Code of Laws was not just because of the Family Laws, Property Laws, and Personal Injury Laws. Hammurabi's code in Family Law is not just. In law 129 it says that if a married person commits adultery with another person, they will be tied up and thrown into the water.
The first reason that Hammurabi’s Code of law is unjust is the Personal Injury Law. In document E, law number 218 stated that if a surgeon operated with a bronze lancet on a free man for a serious injury and the man dies, his hands will be cut off. Also in law numbers 209 and 213 they stated that a if a man has struck a free women and the fruit of her womb is lost he pays 10 shekels of silver but if the man hit’s a slave women and she loses her froot of the womb the man only has to pay 2 shekels of silver. It might seem if the personal injury laws are absolutely just but they are really not because in law 218 the surgeon hands are cut of if he fails to save the man and in laws 213 and 209 the free women gets more shekels of silver then the slave women and also if the man hits the women and the fruit of her womb in not lost the man
Do you think cutting someone's hand off because they striked their father is fair? Hummurabi’s code was just because it helps protect the weak. Hammurabi code was created in the empire of Babyloina in Mesopotamia.
I believe that Hammurabi’s code was just. I have all of the laws and documents that support my claim as to why I think the code was just. I think that Hammurabi’s code was just because obviously these things had to have happened at least once or they wouldn’t have laws about it. So society needs to learn even if it means having that harsh of a punishment. Having that harsh of a punishment actually helps because society sees that if they do that specific crime, they will get a really bad punishment so that prevents it from happening.
The definition of the word “just” is fair, therefore I will be explaining if I think the laws are fair or unfair. In my opinion, Hammurabi’s laws were unfair to the citizens of the civilization. The laws were very cruel, unnecessary, and very extra. In the following paragraphs, I will explain my reasoning for my thoughts on Hammurabi’s laws. Based on the information that I have read on
What’s so important about the Law Code of Hammurabi? Why does it hold so much value? What has it done in today’s modern day society? I find it to be one of those things that helped better this world. Providing an organized set of laws, it helped structure human civilization.
The Ancient Mesopotamian cultures, Sumer, Akkad, Babylon, and Assyria, have left their permanent mark on history. Whether in law or literature, like The Law Code of Hammurabi and The Legend of Sargon respectively, the imprint left by those ancient peoples is clear. The continuing influence of Mesopotamian cultures is still a part of modern cultures. One of the most well known products of the Mesopotamian cultures, The Law Code of Hammurabi, inscribed on a giant stele that is now displayed in the Louvre Museum of Paris, is the embodiment of the cultures’ lingering imprint. While not the oldest law code to be discovered, The Law Code of Hammurabi is one of the first to exemplify the idea of the accused being innocent until proven guilty, something that has been carried over into modern law.
Hammurabi’s code is just because of its family law. The family law makes it just because they make it fair for the family to move on after struggles. According to law 195 if a son has struck his own father he shall have his hands cut off so he can 't hit his father anymore. So I think it 's fair because he can 't hit his family members can 't hurt them any more so it 's keeping his family safe.
Hammurabi’s code was not just because the personal injury laws did not protect all people equally, property laws were harsh and not protecting people enough, and the Family laws should allow people to be with whoever they want to be with. Hammurabi's code and the modern laws have several similarities and differences. For example, they are both intended to maintain order in society. One way that Hammurabi’s Code and the Modern Laws are different is because Hammurabi’s Code is strictly based on social structure.
