The above lesson plan by Lydia Kim isn’t horrible, that being said it did need work to be done. It seems as though she might have written this post her lesson actually being taught because there’s a lot of missed steps and she doesn’t seem to care about the steps being a continuous stream of thought. For example when she says “the group will prepare for their final presentation” problem is she hasn’t told the students’ or us what form that will take (Kim, p. 2). This leads me to believe one of two options, either she doesn’t care, or she’s rushing to type up a lesson plan for a lesson she’s already done. Though the title does say “13 Colonies Using Google Maps” I still think there had to be a better way of demonstrating the use of Google Maps, like maybe if she had brought up students to help her flick through the tools that might have been better (Kim, p. 1). The other problem is that, after reading this lesson plan I think she is aiming for a younger age group and because she doesn’t mention how long her periods are, this seems like too much stationary sitting for that age group. Again this could have been solved by have students come up to the smart board, which she does say she needs, and having them experiment with the tool themselves. I wish that Lydia Kim had added her worksheet template to the lesson plan because I am left wondering what she was even having them look at or research, or was she just having them experiment with the Google Maps tool, I have no idea which is another problem with this lesson plan. In the end I decided to change almost the entire lesson plan, leaving only intact the fact that it’s a geography lesson about the 13 colonies and the use of a worksheet. I chose to do this because already Lydia Kim’s lesson was basically bare bones so it would be easy to change, plus I believe that her lesson plan was meant for a younger grade level then my intend target grade of 11th
