Community based nursing is the application of nursing skills outside of the hospital setting. The most well-known locations for community based nursing are schools, health departments, and clinical doctors’ offices, but these are not the only locations it can take place (Hackney, 2015). This essay will discuss the contributions of famous nurses within the area of community based nursing. These nurses include Lillian Wald, Mary Brewster, Jessie Sleet Scales, and Mary Breckenridge. Also covered in this essay is the discussion of how community based nursing and the flu epidemic of 1918 are connected. Lillian Wald started her career in community based nursing by founding the Visiting Nurse Service in 1893 after graduating from the New York Hospital Training School for Nurses in 1891. Mary Brewster graduated from the same nursing school as Lillian Wald. She started her career in community based nursing by providing care to New York City citizens during a state of depression in the 19th century. Mary Brewster worked alongside Lillian Wald to open the Henry Street Settlement. This Settlement was beneficial to public health because it mainly housed ill and impoverished immigrants that brought foreign illnesses from their home countries. Since they treated these patients overall public health in New York City improved. Jessie Sleet Scales was the first African-American public health nurse. She was a member of the Charity Organization Society’s tuberculosis committee and was required to visit black neighborhoods that were affected by this ailment. Mary Breckenridge founded the Frontier Nursing Service. This service provided in-home care for the poor that lived in the Appalachian Mountains.
