In the play Julius Caesar, there are two major themes that stick out. The themes are jealousy and power. Even though power seems to be bigger, I believe jealousy is part of what drives the need for power. So really the play would not have a theme of power without a theme of jealousy. The senators and others who are in power over Rome have power, but they always want more showing that they are jealous of each other. They are jealous because they are afraid someone will have more power than they do. In the play, it states that Caesar does not know that a group of powerful Romans want to murder him.” Also, in the play, when the Romans ganged up on Julius, it was a show of the want for power over everything else which was driven by the jealousy of the senators being afraid that Caesar was going to take their power. …show more content…

That’s how all the conflict arose in the play and finally ended up in Caesar’s death. Brutus decided Julius had to die because he let his need for power triumph over his friendship and trust with Julius. This is where the theme of jealousy comes into play. For Brutus, the theme of jealousy best fits because Brutus wants to make sure the senate remains in power which will allow him to keep his power. In the play, Brutus states that “I do fear Caesar for becoming king for do I love Rome more.” Brutus is also a good example of the theme of jealousy.
