1. Symbols add to the magical appeal of the story because they enhance the understanding. The symbolization of the storm in the story shows the change from reality to magically. The wings of the old man are also a symbol is the story. Wings typically represent limitless freedom of motion and are magical however the wings of the old man limit him, they appear too fragile and old like the man giving them a real aspect. Allowing the reader to understand that something that is magically has real aspects as well in magical realism.

The symbols in the story help convey the story, this show how the angel is human like and deserve to be treated similarly and not to be trapped and dehumanized. The symbolization of the captives of animals and the angel may suggest how the towns people want to keep everything contained, anything with ability to become superior to the. The wings of the angel also symbolize age and humanness as well as differences, the old man is more human but still is captive, trapped and mistreat due to these wings.
