Ancient Egyptian Religion Long, long ago there was a civilization that flourished near the Nile River. This long-lasting civilization was called ancient Egypt. ancient Egypt existed from around 3100 B.C.E. to 350 C.E. This ancient civilization had a social pyramid. At the bottom, there were the slaves, farmers, and other low class workers. The priests and nobles were in the middle, and at the top were the pharaohs. The pharaohs were believed to be gods and meant to be kings to rule the region. Many people were polytheistic and believed in the pharaohs. They also thought that there was an afterlife for the pharaohs, so they mummified their bodies and built pyramids as tombs

In ancient Egypt, they mummified pharaohs to preserve their bodies for the afterlife. They thought when pharaohs entered the afterlife, they needed their bodies. Wealthy people decided to build tombs underground, so it would be harder for raiders to raid them. However, they soon found out that the bodies would rot due to the condensation from not being able to escape. To fix this, they mummified the bodies and put the organs in special jars called canopic jars. Along with their body and organs, they would fill tombs up with amulets and other items they thought the soul needed in the afterlife. Priests used amulets for invoking the powers of the gods. They also put charms on gods’ statues too. Amulets were also instilled with the meaning of good luck.
