The Ancient Egyptians believed in a journey of life after death. They believed one’s body must be kept whole and preserved known as mummification. If they are successful in their afterlife journey, then they would achieve immortality. I chose the Mummy and Cartonnage of Hor for my Egyptian exploration item because I have always thought Egyptian cartonnages were beautiful and detailed and their techniques used to make them fascinated me. I have always felt Ancient Egyptian “obsession” of death stemmed from the old age question of “what happen when we die?” Their quest for answers fueled by myths, I believe shaped their rituals surrounding death and therefore led them to have respect for human life even after death. The term mummy comes from the mummification of a body; preservation is very important to their religious beliefs. They believed that in death after one successfully finished their journey their soul would be reunited with the body after it was buried. Cartonnage is a type of material made of layers of linen or papyrus that is then covered with plaster and painted. It protects the mummy inside the coffin, while the symbols drawn on it helped the deceased reach the afterlife. Horus was originally imagined to be a sky god, represented as a falcon with outstretched wings. The Egyptians believed that the pharaoh was the 'living Horus'.
