Over the many years before the Common Era, the ancient Greek people had four main governments. These four being a Monarchy, Oligary, Tyranny, and a Democracy. Different City-States had different forms of governments; this either strengthened that City-State or weakened it. Each government lasted a long period before the people changed the way of government. The government that is currently functioning today is currently labeled as a Democracy. The first main government was a Monarchy. This was a government where a City-State had a King/Queen for a ruler. Usually a City-State would have one, but a popular City-State by the name of Sparta had two Kings. This form of government ended around 1200 B.C.E. The second main government was an Oligary.
