As “conscious” rap becomes the main interest of mainstream pop, audiences worldwide are listening to hip-hop for its simplified sound, and lyrical complexity (Ralph, 2023). Our modern generation of hip-hop rappers brings us listeners into exploring our social and political commentaries. Laurence Ralph recently published his opinion piece about an article every music lover would love to read in the New York Times. I see that his findings are relevant and valid, however there are some points I would like to elaborate on that the author needed more context on a specific topic. Ralph demonstrates that Kendrick denounced Drake for culturally appropriating Southern rap culture to his advantage. Ralph continues to support Kendrick’s take on the hip-hop genre, as he understands the origins and artistic growth around the genre. In addition to using social commentaries and cultural historic events, which tend to be a part of Kendrick’s lyricism in his music, that happens to be more impactful, in contrast to Drake, as he incorporated the use of A.I. and bringing up music artists who aren’t relevant to the genre. Lastly, Ralph concludes that the recent rap battle feud has become a relevant part of hip-hop history and audiences will see what comes next for Kendrick.
